Evacuation & Shelters

If you decide to evacuate your pet to a shelter, please call the shelter ahead of time to inquire about restrictions and policies:

  • 1.  Only people living in mandatory evacuation zones and mobile homes are eligible for pet shelters.  Proof of residency is required.
  • 2.  You must stay with your pets!  You are responsible for caring for and feeding them for the duration of the evacuation.
  • 3.  The shelter must be your last resort.  Your first option should be to evacuate to a friends home or a pet-friendly motel.
  • 4.  You must have a pet to be admitted. No extended family members allowed.
  • 5.  The shelter will provide people food. You must provide pet food and bedding.
  • 6.  Dogs must be on a leash.  You must bring a kennel large enough for your pet to stand up in and turn around.
  • 7.  All pets must have microchips, current rabies vaccinations and tags, ID tags, and flea/tick medications.
  • 8.  No aggressive dogs or dogs with known bite history allowed. Any dog classified by the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control asdangerous orpotentially dangerous will not be allowed.
  • 9.  No wolves, wolf hybrids, or jungle cats. No reptiles.
  • 10.  Pocket pets, birds and cats must arrive in cages or carriers. No large parrot cages.
  • 11.  Birds must have health certificates showing they are free of disease and have been tested for psittacosis.
  • 12.  Bans applying to other shelters apply (no alcohol, weapons, drugs or bad behavior)
