Spay Neuter

Low Cost Spay & Neuter Program

Thank you for your interest in the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League low cost spay and neuter clinic! Our staff works hard to spay and neuter an average of 30 cats and dogs every weekday. The League has spayed and neutered more than 135,000 cats and dogs since we opened our clinic in 1973.

The League provides low cost spaying and neutering of cats and dogs for residents with a limited income in an effort to reduce pet overpopulation. Every year an estimated 4 to 6 million cats and dogs are euthanized in the United States simply because there are not enough homes for all the cats and dogs. This is known as the Pet OverpopulationProblem.

In Palm Beach County last year 10,000 pets were placed into loving homes, unfortunately, 20,000 were not. Our goal is to help bring the numbers into balance, so that every adoptable pet can be placed in a loving home for life.

The fee for spay and neuter surgeries for both cats and dogs is $50.
We will microchip your pet for an additional charge of $10.00
If your dog is not current on heartworm medication it is necessary that we perform a heartworm occult test for a fee of $10.00.

On average it costs the League $75.00 to spay and neuter a pet. We charge less than that to help pet owners with a limited income who can’t afford to go to a private veterinarian. We do encourage any applicant that can afford to go to a private veterinarian to please do.

So how do you get your pet scheduled for surgery?

  • The first step is to fill out an application. Print the application and instruction sheet by clicking on the link below. Or you may apply on-line directly through the link below.
  • Please read over the instruction sheet as it will answer many of your questions.
  • Fill out the application (one for each pet) and send it to us.
  • You can fax it (the number is on the bottom of the application), mail it or drop it off in person.
  • We do require payment before we will schedule the appointment.
  • Once we have your application and payment, a client services representative will call you to schedule an appointment.
  • If your animal is sick, in heat, has sores or injuries please contact us to reschedule your appointment (561) 472-8818 extension 167.
  • Please be aware if your animal is sick, running a fever, or has other medical issues that our veterinarian feels would put your animal at risk to go under anesthesia, we will not perform the surgery. We do this in the best interest of your pet, not to inconvenience you. We would then suggest you see a private veterinarian before rescheduling the surgery.
  • You will be required to wait with your pet on the morning of the surgery appointment just in case your pet is not a good candidate for surgery. The wait is generally about 30 minutes.
  • If you have further questions please contact the surgery desk by dialing 561-472-8818 extension 167 or emailing us [click here to email].

Spay/Neuter Surgeries

  • Spaying is the surgical removal of the reproductive organs (ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes) of the female animal.
  • Neutering is the surgical removal of the reproductive glands (testes) of the male animal.
  • Females and males should be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age. Older animals can be altered as long as they are in good health.
  • All sterilization surgery at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is performed under general anesthesia by a licensed veterinarian.

Benefits of Spaying (females):

  • No heat cycles, therefore males will not be attracted.
  • Less desire to roam.
  • Eliminates or reduces the risk of mammary gland tumors, ovarian and/or uterine cancer, especially if done before the first heat cycle.
  • Reduces number of unwanted cats/kittens/dogs/puppies.
  • Helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

Benefits of Neutering (males):

  • Reduces or eliminates risk of spraying and marking.
  • Less desire to roam, therefore less likely to be injured in fights or auto accidents.
  • Risk of testicular cancer is eliminated, and decreases incidence of prostate disease.
  • Reduces number of unwanted cats/kittens/dogs/puppies.
  • Decreases aggressive behavior, including dog bites (unaltered dogs are 6.4 times more likely to bite).
  • Helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

Additional Benefits:

  • Our community will also benefit. Lost and abandoned cats and dogs are a very real public health concern in many places. These animals can easily become a public nuisance, soiling parks and streets, ruining shrubbery, frightening children and elderly people, creating noise and other disturbances, causing automobile accidents, and sometimes even killing other pets.
  • The capture, impoundment and eventual destruction of unwanted cats and dogs costs taxpayers and private humanitarian agencies over a billion dollars each year. As a potential source of rabies and other less serious diseases, they present a public health hazard.
